iOS 4.2 Imminent
Apple have promised the release of iOS 4.2, the latest update to their mobile operating system some time this week. Featuring a plethora of new functions iOS 4.2 is also reported to resolve a number of bugs and security flaws.
Perhaps the most important feature of iOS 4.2 is the introduction of multi-tasking to the iPad. The iPhone has now had multi-tasking capabilities for some months, but the iPad has been lacking the ability to run multiple apps at once since it's initial release. It is anticipated that the ability to switch immediately between running apps will finally see the iPad become a serious contender against other portable computing devices like netbooks for commercial activities.
Another more business-oriented upgrade will be the addition of printing functionality to the core operating system. Despite there being some quite restrictive limitations to the printing functions (as we discussed in the blog article here), AirPrint is hoped to help continue the transition of Apple devices from consumer toys to business tools. Improved mail integration and a proper folder management tool will only further Apple's corporate drive.
Other functions appear targeted at consumers, particularly AirPlay, which is designed to stream audio and video from an iPhone or iPad to a suitably equipped device. Currently Apple have agreements in place with B&W, JBL and Marantz to license the AirPlay software with products appearing on the market in time for Christmas.
